  Topics in Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Writing
I was presenting a workshop on literacy in the sand table at the Utah Early Childhood Conference this past Saturday. I was reminded about how critical it is to help young children feel comfortable with writing. Many early childhood educators mistakenly use handwriting activities as a writing response. Read more.

Old MacDonald Had a Farm
A favorite song with young children is "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" They love to make the animal sounds. Read the book Old MacDonald in the City to introduce the idea of different kinds of jobs Old MacDonald could have and the different sounds they would make. Try singing the song using other ideas. .   Circle Time

The Water Cooler
Curling up with a good book is my favorite spare time activity, but once in a while I 'uncurl' todo a little channel surfing. Since works of historical fiction are rarely a topic with my peers, I like to be "in the know" on shows from "American Idol" to the "X Factor" so I do not feel left out during break-time conversations. Even at an age where I should know better, I want to fit in around the water cooler! Read more.

  Teaching Children with Special Needs

Promoting a Skills-Based Curriculum
It's nice to know all the states and capitals in the United States. It's great to be able to list the Presidents of the United States in order. Unfortunately, most students don't get a lot of use from this information once they leave school. Well --- unless they get to be a guest on Jeopardy. Read more.

How to Get a School Grant

April & May Seem to Present a Unique Opportunity
I've been running The School Funding Center for more than 10 years. In that time I've always tried to monitor how many schools were out there looking for grants at any given time. While I know that some schools may still be on spring break or have it coming up, I have never seen the activity on our database go this low. How could this be important to you? Read more.
