ACTIVITY
Growing up the Beanstalk

An Activity for Preschoolers
Children hear fairytales about wondrous things that grow and change. This activity invites the preschool child to observe a bean seed “growing up” and encourages them to notice the changes that take place.

Science
Before You Start
Cover your work area with a plastic drop cloth.
Let's Begin
1. Invite the children to help fill the pot with potting soil. Help them push the pole down the center of the pot. Have them gently push three magic beans a half an inch down in the potting soil, next to the pole. Place the pot outside or in a sunny location. Water the plant and observe its growth. Talk about how the plant is changing. When the plant produces beans, encourage the children to pick and eat the beans. You may want to open them up or cook and eat them.
Furthermore
Take pictures of the bean’s growth. Also record anecdotal observations and collect children’s drawings. Put the photos, notes, and drawings together into a beanstalk book when the plant has reached maturity.
