Read aloud
Glad Monster, Sad Monster
by Anne Miranda or another simple book about feelings. Draw a simple happy face and sad face on round circles.
Let's Begin
1. Draw a happy face and a sad face on two round circles. Let the child pick one happy face and one sad face.
2. Help her tape the paint stick to the back of one face. Place the other face on the other side and attach, making a large two-sided stick puppet.
3. Once every toddler has a face, group together to play “Sad face, glad face.”
4. Say “When I eat ice cream my face is glad” and hold up the glad side of your puppet. Encourage the children to follow you.
5. Say “When I fall down and get hurt, my face is sad” and show the sad side.
6. Repeat a few times. Let older toddlers take a turn, telling something that makes them glad or sad.
Furthermore
Read other simple stories about feelings. Good titles for toddlers include The Feelings Book by Todd Parr and What are YOU So Grumpy About? by Todd Lichtenheld.
