ACTIVITY
Webs of Art
By Rae Ann Hirsh
Spiders are not insects, but are often studied along with insects. The strength of a spider web is amazing. This activity allows the school age child a chance to try their own web building skills.

Before You Start
No preparation needed.
Let's Begin
1. Instruct the children to build their own spider web.
2. Have them choose a type of string for their web.
3. Ask them to pick a string that they think would be the strongest.
4. Have them begin the web by tying a piece of string to the embroidery hoop.
5. Each time the string is pulled tight to the end of the hoop, tie it tight to keep it from slipping. Encourage the child to choose what pattern the web should be.
6. After the webs are constructed, have them test the strength by dropping balls of different weights and sizes onto the strung hoop.
Furthermore
Give all children the same string, and see whose design has the most strength.
