Before You Start
Plan to do this activity on a warm, sunny spring day. Pack an entomologist kit for each student. Each drawstring bag would include a disposable camera, notebook, binoculars, microscope, tweezers, and a small plastic container.
Let's Begin
1. Ask the children what an entomologist might do? Tell children they study insects. Ask what would be the best way to study an insect? Take the children to a warm, sunny location. Divide the children into small groups of 2 or 3. Give each group an entomologist kit. Encourage each group to explore a specific location outdoors. Ask them to find out as much information as they can about the kind of insects that live in their location. Ask the children to draw them in the notebook, take field notes about what they eat, do, and where they are found. Take pictures of the insects in their natural habitat. Catch some insects and put them in the plastic container for closer observation.
Furthermore
Create a class book about insects native to the schoolyard.
