Bugs of All Kinds
By Shelley Butler
Bugs are fascinating creatures that come in a wide variety of kinds, colors, shapes, and sizes. Introduce toddlers to some real bugs and then ask them to create their own.

Before You Start
Cut out enough bug body parts (body, head, eyes, antennae, legs) in various colors so that there are more than enough for each child to create a bug with each part. You can cut out the parts in differing sizes, too. Make a sample bug.
Let's Begin
1. Look at the pictures in DK Big Book of Bugs by Kate Greenaway, and name the insects for the children. Ask the children to say the names with you. Point out some of the differences between insects.
2. Next, ask children to create their own bug. Demonstrate how and show the sample bug you created earlier. Put the child’s name on the front of the bug picture and proudly display around the room.
Furthermore
For more bug pictures, focus one day on a particular insect like the ladybug, show pictures or a real lady bug, and cut out red bodies, black dots, and other ladybug body parts so each child can create their own ladybug.
