ACTIVITY
Sounds Under the Stars

An Activity for Preschoolers
Preschool children have vivid imaginations and are learning to create their own stories. This activity jump starts their interest and encourages them to verbalize their ideas.
Curriculum Area
Language and Science
Before You Start
Read a story about camping out, such as When Daddy Took Us Camping by Julie Billhart or The Ten Alarm Camp Out by Kathy Warren. Talk about things you might do or see when camping.
Let's Begin
1. Before class, stick the stars on the ceiling in a pattern.

2. Have the children lie on their backs on the floor. Tell them we are pretending to sleep under the stars in the outdoors.

3. Turn off the lights so the children can see the stars on the ceiling. Ask them what shapes or outlines they see in the stars.

4. Have the children be very quiet and listen. Play the tape and try to identify each sound. You can create your own tape if needed.
Furthermore
Visit a pet store and purchase some feeder crickets. Place in baby food jars with holes punched in the top to create a greater “outdoorsy” mood. When you’re done with the crickets, let the children examine them before setting them free outdoors.
