ACTIVITY
Family Vacation

Pretend play stretches the imagination and is an important form of social interaction for preschool children. Dramatic play enhances language skills and is just plain fun!
Curriculum Area
Dramatic Play, Language and Social/Emotional
Before You Start
Read When the Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant or another book about families.
Let's Begin
1. Discuss family trips with the children. Have they gone to visit relatives? Grandma or Grandpa? Who else? Did they drive? Did they stay overnight?

2. Encourage them to discuss what they would pack for a long trip. Let them be silly with it.

3. For dramatic play, provide the children with suitcases, duffel bags, old clothes, and other items. Encourage them to pack for an imaginary family trip.

4. Ask them to act out how they will get there and what they will do.
Furthermore
Have the children draw a picture of their imaginary trips. Let them tell you about the picture so you can write a descriptive sentence at the bottom.
