ACTIVITY
What Birdies Do

An Activity for Preschoolers
This activity will not only give your toddlers an opportunity to experience a variety of movements; it should also increase their awareness of birds and nature.
Curriculum Area
Gross Motor Development and Science
Before You Start
All toddlers have seen birds but probably haven’t paid much attention to their habits. Talk to the children about birds and the activities listed below, describing them in as much detail as possible.
Let's Begin
1. Invite the children to pretend to be birds doing the following:
• Splashing in a bird bath
• Eating seed at a feeder
• Building a nest
• Feeding a baby bird
• Cracking a sunflower seed on a branch
• Flying
• Sleeping in a nest
Furthermore
Although it’s wonderful to give children the opportunity to solve movement problems on their own, toddlers often require demonstration. So, if you find it would be helpful to your children, you should pretend to do the above, too!
