ACTIVITY
Being the Big Bad Wolf

Preschoolers will have tons of fun pretending to be the big bad wolf and learning about the sturdy or not-so-sturdy nature of traditional building materials.

Before You Start
Cut the white construction paper to fit the bottoms of the three shoeboxes and glue in place. Cut the pink paper in the shape of three little pigs and make one set of three pigs for each box. Glue the pigs to the center of the white paper. Let dry. Set the boxes on a table low enough for the children to stand over them and look inside comfortably. Cover the pigs in the first box with the straw and the pigs in the second box with the twigs. Lay the stones atop the pigs in the third box.
Let's Begin
1. Read the story of the Three Little Pigs to the children.

2. Take some of the straw, twigs and stones and show them to the children. Pass them around and ask them to compare the weights of each box. Which feels light? Which feels a little heavier? Which is heaviest?

3. Replace the materials into their appropriate boxes. Bring the class up to the table where the boxes are waiting and tell them that three little pigs are inside all of the boxes.

4. Have the rest of the children go play while you call 2 children at a time to come up and pretend to be the big bad wolf.

5. First show them the house of straw, and tell them to “huff and puff” and see if they can blow the house away. When they blow, the straw will scatter, revealing the three little pigs beneath.

6. Proceed with the second box and third.
Furthermore
Have the children sit in a circle and discuss which materials were easy to blow away and which were more difficult. Review why they were easy or hard to blow away.
