ACTIVITY
Body Instruments

Music is form of artistic expression and teaches about rhythm and sounds. This activity allows children the chance to explore rhythm and experiment with ways to create their own music using their bodies.
Before You Start
Take a few minutes to listen to at least two kinds of music. Nature tapes work well, but any type of music/sounds can be used. Point out the beats and different instruments.
Let's Begin
1. Brainstorm with the children to come up with all the ways to use your body as a musical instrument. Clapping, tapping, stomping, humming, and beating your chest are a few suggestions.

2. Create a simple rhythm, such as clap-clap-stomp, and encourage the children to repeat it.

3. Let students take turns creating their own patterns as well.

4. Tape record a few and play back for the class.
Furthermore
Create additional simple instruments. Paper plates stapled together with beans inside become a tambourine for hands to shake. A paper towel roll becomes a microphone for mouth to hum or talk into. Rubber bands attaching wooden blocks to feet become make-do tap shoes.
