ACTIVITY
Spiral Snake

Preschool children are learning to use scissors. This simple activity helps develop those fine motor skills as they cut curved lines.
Before You Start
Look at photographs of snakes in a nonfiction book. Good titles include Outside and Inside Snakes by Sandra Markle and A Gathering of Garter Snakes by Bianca Lavies.
Let's Begin
1. Start with an oval (head) and draw a spiral on a piece of construction paper. Make a large, thick spiral for children still learning to use scissors. Draw a longer, thinner spiral shape for those with good cutting skills.

2. Show the children how to cut along the line. Have a few extra pieces of paper just in case a child cannot do it successfully.

3. Let the children add eyes, scales, and a tongue with crayons.

4. Hang the snakes from the ceiling so that they spiral down to create a unique creepy, crawly look.
Furthermore
Make snakes by stuffing old ties with fiberfill or newspaper. Create a classroom snake by making a paper chain that encircles your room.
