ACTIVITY
Grocery Store

This activity helps support the development of children’s mathematical skills by creating a hands-on experience that is relevant and meaningful for their developmental level.
Curriculum Area
Mathematics
Before You Start
Gather items for children to use in their pretend grocery store.
Let's Begin
1. Allow children to set up a grocery store in the dramatic play area. Stock the store with pretend food and packages or real, non-perishable grocery items.

2. Have them put a price tag on each of the grocery items in the store.

3. Let children set up a cash register with pretend money provided.

4. Give each child a packet of money to 'spend' in the store. Help the children understand the amount by including a sign that indicates the worth of each coin or bill.
Furthermore
Teachers can provide children with the opportunity to develop abstract reasoning skills, learn complex math concepts and create solutions to real-life problems with similar activities and role-play situations. Activities like the grocery store are a creative and fun way to help children learn about keeping track of time, the amounts and how to use money and basic fractions.
