Article Guidelines

1. Feature Articles

A payment of $75 is made for one page feature articles published in Early Childhood News. A payment of $100 is made for two-page feature articles published in Early Childhood News. Early Childhood News holds the copyright to all articles published.

Manuscripts submitted as potential feature articles should:

  • Be between 600 and 1200 words in length.
  • If research based, contain recent studies (no more than five years old). Always cite original research. If you are building on the work of others, be sure to acknowledge their work.
  • Contain a short biography of yourself to be included at the end of the article.
  • Include the author's name, address, telephone number, and social security number for payment purposes.

To submit a feature article for consideration, mail your manuscript to: Megan Shaw, Editor, Early Childhood News, 330 Progress Rd., Dayton, OH 45449. Please provide a computer diskette if available. Because of the large number of feature story manuscripts received, unsolicited manuscripts cannot be returned or acknowledged. Feel free to call Megan Shaw at (937) 847-5900 ext. 142 to inquire about the status of a manuscript.

2. Professional Development (Continuing Education Unit) Articles

Each issue of Early Childhood News contains two articles approved for the University of Wisconsin-Stout's Professional Development Program. The articles are evaluated by the University of Wisconsin-Stout's faculty review board and approved for continuing education units by the University's Office of Continuing Education/Extension.

A payment of $200 is made for CEU articles published in Early Childhood News. Early Childhood News holds the copyright to all articles published.

Manuscripts submitted as potential CEU articles must follow American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines (ISBN #0-912704-57-8) and should:

  • Be double spaced and one sided on 8-1/2" x 11" white bond paper.
  • Use a minimum 12-point type.
  • Be between 2200 and 3000 words in length.
  • Include a title page with author's name, address, home/business/fax phones, professional affiliations, and social security number for payment purposes. Because articles are evaluated by a blind review process, the author's name should only appear on the title page.
  • Include a page, immediately following the title page, which states the objectives, purposes, and content outline of the article.
  • Number pages consecutively beginning with the title page. If possible, lines should be numbered continuously through the manuscript.
  • Reference all research and resources. Research references should be recent (no more than five years old) unless they are historical literature.
  • Cite original research. If you are building on the work of others, be sure to acknowledge their work. Original research is highly valued.
  • Provide a short narrative about the author to be included at the end of the article.

To submit an article for CEU program consideration, send three completed copies including title page, outline, references, and manuscript to: Megan Shaw, Editor, Early Childhood News, 330 Progress Rd., Dayton, OH 45449. Please provide a computer diskette if available. To inquire about the status of a CEU article manuscript call Megan Shaw at (937) 847-5900.

Both Continuing Education Unit and Feature articles should:

• Use headings and subheadings wherever appropriate.
• Include a list of supplemental readings or resources (i.e., videos, audio tapes, or training materials).
• Include charts, sidebars, illustrations, and/or photographs.
• Use an informal, personal writing style. To add vitality to your writing, use the active voice.
• Use short simple sentences to create an easy reading style. Although our writing style is non-academic, the content of your article should be grounded in solid research.
• Use non-discriminatory, non-sexist language.

Submission of a manuscript is a representation that it has not been published elsewhere, and is not under consideration by other publications. Once accepted for publication, copyright of the article transfers from the author to Early Childhood News.

Photography Guidelines

Early Childhood News is always looking for high-quality photographs to be used as cover art and as art for editorial pieces. Photographic topics of interest include child care settings, children from birth to six years, children in action, teachers and directors in action, and other related topics. Photographers are responsible for obtaining releases for all photographs submitted.

Depending on the quality and size used, Early Childhood News pays between $25 and $50 for photographs published within the magazine. Cover photographs are negotiated on an individual basis. Early Childhood News expects that authors will submit photographs to accompany their articles, without additional payment.

Unless otherwise stated in writing, all photographs paid for by Early Childhood News are for non-exclusive, unlimited rights, including publication in Early Childhood News magazine, article reprints, and advertising.

While color slides or transparencies are preferred, color photographs are also accepted. The photographer’s name, address, phone number, and social security number should be written on the back of all photographs. Photographs cannot be returned and are not acknowledged unless they are published. Please submit photographs to Megan Shaw, Editor, Early Childhood News, 330 Progress Road, Dayton, OH 45449.
