Subject: Substitute for sand in sandbox

i work in a day care center, and we have a sand box. However, we find that the sand is very difficult to contain/clean up. We would like to use something like rice or beans or birdseed instead. However, we do have little ones around, and we can't use something that they may choke on or stick in ears. Anyone have any success with a sand substitute? Any problems i should be aware of?
