I am way overdue on contributing to the shoe discussion but here's my view anyway. Living and working in Viet Nam and coming from Australia, one has had to adjust quite a few of my EC views. In Viet Nam it is customary that you leave your shoes at the door and children are therefore barefooted in the classroom. I have recently become barefooted in the classroom after a child commented that it was dirty to wear shoes inside!! More considerate of diversity than previously, I always still consider the health and safety and cleanliness issues in my class. I definitely don't think its unprofessional as some indicated.
