Space
It is so not necessary to have dedicated day care space. In NYS, the regulations say, "The home must have adequate indoor space for the comfort of the children and to accommodate a variety of activities for the number of children in care." Nice and vague, isn't it? But they limit the number of children you can have - if you accept babies, you can't have more than 2 children under the age of 2 plus 3 children over the age of 2 plus 2 School-aged chidlren. If you only accept children over the age of 2, you can have 6 children plus 2 school aged children. You can Group family, but I;m not familiar with that and don't know the numbers. You just need to be creative with your furniture most times! Turn the couch so that you have a corner for books and quiet play like puzzles. The blocks, keep inside a closet where they (or you) can pull them out in the morning into your living room and they can play there. Tape paper to the walls in your hall and they can color and paint there - who says they need an easel? Those only take up space! If you love children, family child care is wonderful. I've loved it for years now.
