I have the children sit in a circle tell a child something nice about them to get it started. Then explain to the children that it will be their turn to say something nice about a friend in the class. I have even played this activity with a ball. When you roll the ball to a child it is their turn to say something nice about a friend in the class. It makes it more fun for the children using a ball, or anything else that they can pass around. When they have the object it is their turn to talk, that also makes them feel special because they have the oppurtunity to speak, and when they can tell what they are thinking they feel special. I have also done the kindness jar, this is something that you need to keep up with, because the children will ask you to read what the children have written or they can draw a picture. I have explained to the children that when you see or hear someone doing or saying something nice to another friend to write it down or they can draw a picture of what they saw. Most children are not writing yet so tell them to ssk you or another adult. I would read what we have collected at the end of the week. This encourages friends to be nice to eachother and they also like to hear friends saying nice things about them.

Have your students write letters to themseles and it can only contain things that they like about themselves. I have my students read them outloud to the rest of the class, because it lets not only themselves, but their peers as well know what they value about themselves.

Subject:challenging boys

I have a lge group of 4 to 5yr olds and within this group I have 5 boys who are very challenging....not helping to pack away, going off to hide, copying each others negative behaviours, running away from teachers, interrupting, cheeking and argueing back, disrupting group sessions, wrecking other kids creations, taking toys without asking, poor attention span and hitting and pushing their peers...I am at my tether and have tried a few strategies such as time out, redirected to another activity until ready to rejoin the group, going over the rules, explaining that we use our words instead of our hands....
any advice will be much appreciated

Take priviledges away from them. Don't let them usr the things they don't put away. Watch how fast they start helping. If they can't do the fun activities eventually they will do what you have asked. You have to be firm and consistant with them.

There are several books from Redleaf Press on transition activities. I think they are call Transition Magician 1 and 2. Good things for preschoolers.

Subject:Reggio schools in Kansas?
|
are there any Reggio schools in the Wichita Kansas area? also project/literacy based would be OK. I just hate the schools that follow themes of the week/month with all teacher-led activities. I'm relocating to this area, I am looking for a good preschool.
