    Subject:Child Care Email Scam

I own a small daycare center in New Jersey and was almost the victim of an email scam that is picking up speed in the child care community. If you get a letter like this, DO NOT RESPOND! "Hello ________(My first and last name,) I am Rev. Chris Owoade, a clergy man, and I work here in Ghana with the First Baptist Church, Accra. I will be coming over to New Jersey on holidays from 30th of June to the 25th of August 2006 for a 8 weeks Vacation with my wife and our 2 kids of the ages of 3 and 5 respectively. We will require the services of a childcare giver, 7am to 7pm, though this could be done rather flexibly, for the entire period of our stay excluding weekends, as my wife and I will not always be with them on most occasions due to other seminars and functions which we will be attending. We will like to pay in advance of our visit so my wife and I can be assured of a care-giver for the kids during our stay because this is our first visit to USA. An early reply will be appreciated. Please acknowledge if you can offer this service ASAP and give me a price quote, and it is most important, you immediately send me an email or call me on 011 233 243 443 623 as soon as you receive this message, so we can conclude on all other arrangements ASAP, as time is not really on our side. Best Regards, Rev. Chris Owoade I actually called this guy (DUH!) and he told me he would send me the two month tuition in advance, but the check would also have money for his family's travel expenses- I would put the check in my account and then send the difference to his "sponsor." I told him he would first have to send me paperwork from our website for both children, before they can be accepted into our program. I did a little research and found out that a website that my daycare is listed on has put out an alert about this scam. (At least I'm not the only dummy!)

    Subject:Scam

I have also been contacted by phone by what my copier service tech described as a "toner pirate" They simply call and ask for the model of your machine, identifing themselves as someone from your toner provider. They are skilled in making it sound legitimate and if employees give the information, they will send you a very large box of toner that will cost double or triple the amount you could purchase it from your copier service. You get stuck with this toner and will have to pay to get it returned, and they keep billing you and calling and it turns into a nightmare. Luckily when they called me, I smelled a rat, because we are on a maintainence contract that includes toner. BEWARE

We also received a toner phone call. Since we only purchase toner from the company where we purchased the copier, I was not interested. Thanks for making these scams known to the child care community.

    Subject:summer teaching

I am a mother of two children - one is 2 years old and the other is 7 years old. I would like to have a "mock" school for them this summer, but I find it very challenging to have a developmentally appropriate curriculum for them. I do not want the 2 year become bored if the curriculum is too advance and I do not want the 7 year to be the same if the curriculum is not advance. Can anyone offer any suggestions for teaching the two age groups at home during the summer? Thanks

Choose a theme e.g. transport/mini bugs/people who help us/dinosaurs. You can have books/puzzles/colouring/trips to expand the themes. Mini bugs is great you can buy kits from ELC and go bug hunting. Follow that up with a trip to Insect World/Butterfly Kingdom (or whatever resource is in your area). The older child can write up a diary of what he has done, the younger child can paint a picture (he'll know what it is). The main objective is to stop them from being bored and to have fun. Remember that children learn more through play and getting out and experiencing the world about them than just sitting reading a book.

    Subject:When filling an enrollment opening

I have a couple of openings in my family child care home that I rent. I recently had a couple looking for care for a three year old. The couple came and visited to scope out my daycare. The conversation has me feeling a little unsure as to accepting their child. Behavior issues that are similar to another child I have doesn't sound like an environment that would work for the group. I think this is the hardest part of my job. How do you tell people who are a little domineering about what they need for their child and yet keep the final decision in my hands? I've been in this business a long time, but have not felt as if I should run the other way before. Ideas?
