Hi, I am the Director of a childcare center that has been in business for at least 12 years. I have been Director for only 1 year, I have worked at the center for 8 years. We've never had alot of parent participation. I would like to start a Parent Advisory Council that would meet at least twice a year. Could anyone share any ideas of things that I could discuss for the first meeting. I want to discuss fundraisers and things of that nature, but I want the parents to be more involved in the center as well, and I want them to be excited about coming to meetings in the future. Anything would help, Thanks in advance.

You could start by coming up with a questionaire for the parents to see what is important for you to include in a parent meeting. We did a parent survey last spring and got about a 65% response, which is very high. Parents were asked to share both positive and negative comments so we could use their feed back to help improve our program.
It is often hard to get working parents involved in a parent meeting. At our parent orientation for the child care part of our program, we had 18 out of 87 families represented. Parents are tired when they get home from work or are so busy taking children to activities or helping with homework, that they just can't spread themselves any thinner. We did have a parent activity at the end of the summer with over half the parents in attendance.
Don't be discouraged with a low turnout. At least you are going to be starting something that will help parents. Serve some sort of refreshments! That always helps and as people are drinking coffee at the end of the meeting, it will give a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and will give you the chance to meet one on one with parents.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you plan to do.
