    Subject:Confidentiality

I program for all my children based on their individual needs and interests. For the first decade, I used initials of the children on the program to note activities programmed for them. Not once did a parent ask me who 'S.P' was, I knew 'SP,' the parents knew and everyone was happy. Now, to extend/maintain confidentiality, each child in the room is assigned a secret number. Three or four times a year I give the parents a letter reminding them of their child's number - the number is also 'hidden' in the childs individual diary. What drives me nuts is - no one knows what their childs number is. . . . I keep a detailed list to ensure that every child, with both individual and group experiences, so no child gets left out. What does everyone else do? Are parents really concerned that Johnny's mum knows that your child made a mud cake? thanks for your feedback

The Days Nursery Act in Ontario states that we have to have children's first and last names on our attendance and sign in/out sheets. Those are obviously used within the program. For things that leave the centre like newsletters we use first names only. We have a form in our registration packet that give permission to use children's image and name in newspaper articles. Parents are free to decline that. I find the system you describe to be odd and totally confusing. I don't use names when I talk about children outside of work. Even children who left my care years ago and are no longer under confidentiality agreements. We sign new confidentially agreements every year.

    Subject:child codes

I have always used a number system on my programmes. At my last centre, I was in the toddler room, I had the children separated into 4 colour groups and then numbered them within those groups. It was a bit confusing but it worked for me. Then again not having done it any other way I didn't know any different!!!! At the centre I'm at now, we don't seem to do any cross-referencing like that. I have mentioned it to a few other staff members but they don't seem to know what I mean. It's all fairly confusing....!!!!!!!!!

Could you mark your plans with the child's initials, but not have them listed on the plans you post for the parents?
