Subject:teachers using cell phones
|
We have a problem with teachers using cell phones in the classroom, on the playground, etc. I have told them that in certain situations, like a child home ill, or doctor calling they can let me know and it is okay. We transfer calls to classrooms when the timing is appropriate and take messages. What kinds of policies to other programs have regarding cell phones?

Cell phones are sooooo not allowed. Because let's face it - in the case of an emergency, the person would call the school, say, "I need so and so, it's an emergency" and the person would be relieved!
Because - there are cell phones with pictures and texting - Calling people is no longer the main concern. We even discourage the parents from bringing their cellphones in and they're fine with it! It was explained to them we were concerned with children's and families' privacy. This way we don't have to worry about who might be taking "discreet" pictures of children.

At my centre you can only have your phone on durring your break. Most of our staff were just using them to chat (no one has anyone significantly ill) so the rule was put in place. If you are caught talking on your cell when you should be working there is a note made. 5 notes will result in a official warning.

I keep my phone in my bag on the shelf in my room BUT only because we have an extremily ill child in the family that has been rushed to hospital 17 times by ambulance and air lifted by helicopter twice to a bigger hospital. I am extremily thankful for having supporting directors that dont mind phones being nearbye, under the condition that no makes or recieves social calls whilst they are working. As for phones with cameras, we used mine a while ago to send a photo sms to my assistant with the kids holding a sign saying we miss you! when she lost a family member and was having time off - not everyone use's them for 'bad' reasons.

Unfortunately, not everyone is good - if they were, we wouldn't have child abductions or sexual predators. You never truly know what anyone is really like. They interview the neighbor of what turns out to be a murderer and they say, "Oh, he was such a nice person." - Yeah, real nice.
Personally, I would never put a child at risk and I'm sure you wouldn't either. But you never know about someone else - Therefore, I don't mind leaving my cellphone off and in my car so that I'm one less person that has to be watched. I want to make a personal phonecall, I can do it in my car.
Also, there was a man outside my son's school building one day just taking pictures. I walked up to him and said, "Excuse me, sir, what do you think you're doing?" He turned out to be working for the Superintendent's office - but he said scores of student and parents and teachers walked past him while he had been taking pictures and I was the only one who questioned him. He said it made him feel good that someone had finally cared enough about the students to finally question him.

We too had a 'strange' man out the front with a video camera, hiding behind a tree! - i saw him walk past us and look into the yard (the path out the front leads onto the beach 200 meters away and 100s of people walk it every day) but an observant partent spotted him - we called the police they had a three officers at the centre in 4 mins, they 'caught' him inside 10 mins , interviewed five staff at the centre with in 30 mins AND sent the poor tourist who had no idea the fuss he caused on his way with in the hour! - it turned out he was moving to the area and decided to film where his children would go to school, and how close it is to the beach. I dont think he will ever do it again!
