Subject:I happen to love being and early childho...

I happen to love being and early childhood teacher. I am very passionate about my profession. I work in an excellent program that fits in with my philosophies and also the hours work well with my main passion, my family. That being said, the pay I receive is low. I knew that going in, though. With eyes wide open, I accepted the low pay in part because of other benefits. (HOURS, FLEXIBILITY,LOCATION)I work for a non-profit and knew the income would not be what would keep me coming back everyday. It is love of what we do each day. I would not be able to stay at this position if my family's financial needs changed. We live comfortably, but go without things we could buy if I worked for a school district instead of a small church.

Melissa, I think it all depends on how much you like being in ECE. I loved it but had to quit after 10 years so that I could make enough money to take care of my 3 girls. But I obviously loveed ECE because I gave up $36,000 a year to go back to $12 an hour in inferior conditions. I'm doing elementary now (and I like that too. Love Kinder and first) but I'm still reading ECE news so I'm still interested in ECE and seriously thinking about getting an MA in ECE so that I can make a better salary. I would say the biggest pro for ECE is the impact that you can make on the children. So if you're into intrinsic value you will definitely get it in ECE. THe cons of course is the low pay and inferior conditions that can exist in some centers. I believe that things are really changing in ECE and pay may get better but only for the teachers who get their degrees. Go for it.

    Subject:ECE

Dear Melissa, ECE is the toughest job you'll ever love! The pay has been low and benefits almost non-existent in the past, but the new standards set forth by the NAEYC (check out their website)will change that for many educators in the field. Centers will have to raise their standards to be accredited, and that will bring about positive changes for us. There will always be small, independent facilities that require little or no education/training and pay little or nothing in the way of salary and benefits. You can put yourself in the best possible position by working toward your degree now (at least your Associate, and finding the best facilities in your area (accredited). If you live near a military base, get your foot in the door. They typically pay much better than most civilian centers, and they offer training that can move you up the pay scale. ECE is the next big thing in the job market and now is a great time to begin your education!

    Subject:rewards of the job

I have worked with under 3's for almost 15 years - i will never be rich, will always have ruined (by kindy paint) clothes, a constant dull ache in my back and possibly industrial deafness. BUT i have made 100's of new friends - there is always someone at the grocery store 'remember us - are you still at the centre?' My rewards are the children running in for a hug, when they want to tell you what they did on the weekend and especially watching them learn and discover the world around them through play. For me it is also working with families - I have made many friends with mums and dads i have met along the way. Finally i think the friendships with my fellow workers - the trials and tribulations of life that you share together - we are always sharing jokes and laughs throughout the day making it a great place to be.

    Subject:Staying in the field

I begain in the field full of energy, hopes and with creative ideas. I am still in the field, but I do notice that some of the other teachers around me are getting tired of the low pay, the not being noticed by the Director (they do not even have instant coffee for the staff) and about the level of professionalism of the other teachers. I just try to bring in instant coffee, candy treats, little happies and lots of encouraging words for them. I know that it is not my JOB to make them feel better, but some kind of recognition is better than what they are getting now. I just work two jobs so that I can afford to buy my family food and to keep the roof over our heads. I have a degree, I am certified in all areas Lead Teacher I/T/Pre-school and as Director, but I still make as much as entry level people. One day at a time. Keep smiling, keep everything in the center positive and just keep going!!!
