Subject:Becoming Director/Owner !!!!! Should I take the plunge..
|
Hi:
Hello to all, I'm new around here..... just wanted to have opinions and advice on taking this big plunge. My husband and I are looking at a business oppt. on opening a preschool.
The sellers are not business brokers, but experienced PRESCHOOL
OPERATORS with three profitable centers already in place . They are
trying to build a small chain of 6 to 10 preschools by
setting up individuals in their own preschool business. We
will receive full training and ongoing support from them. It will be a
mutually profitable franchise-like relationship but without the big
franchise fees and monthly royalties.
All of their preschool/ daycare sites are located in either upscale
shopping plazas or in freestanding buildings. They do not require us
to have child care experience since we will be part of the support
system of a mini chain, and the personal day-to-day help from seasoned
operators.
The capacity of the
center is for 52 -56 children. The seller has handed us a business
plan, marketing plan and financial forecast for the next 5 years, and
has already secured the retail space. We have given him a $1,000
deposit to secure the space.
The next step is to review the lease and sign the contract.
I worked as a teachers aid in my college years but have no formal childcare education, well unless you count parenting my 14 and 9 year old girls !!!! But, both my husband and I have degrees in
Business Administration and have been in supervisor and managerial
positions for the past 15 years, but we think this would be the best
way to go into this business. I am in the process of getting certified
so that I can work in the center full time.
We are looking at hiring 5-to 6 certified pre-school teachers. I would have to work in one of the sellers daycare's for at least 4 weeks (paid) to get a handle on running the business and the day to day.We are looking to have a long term relationship with them in everything from developing curriculums, marketing , staffing, etc.
If at the end of the day I feel I am not qualified to be the Director of the center, we would hire a Director and we would stay behind the scenes in managing the business as owners.
We have been in talks for the last 4 months with the sellers, and they have always been up front with us, (so far).
The sellers are a husband and wife team, she is a Teacher/Registered Nurse/Dietician with more than 15 years experience and he takes care of all the administration of the daycare's and he has been involved in owning businesses for the last 25 years. She has put together a wonderful curriculum for all 3 schools and we visited two of the centers and were very impressed. They have afterschool care and summer camp, VPK and other federal programs.
I really feel like this is something I could do and have a passion for and it's not everyday that a successful business owner is willing to part with their proven formula. Do you think that would be enough ??
Thanks for any advice you can send my way....!!!!

It would be a high priority, if I were in your place, to secure some early childhood education. One of the sellers of the business you are working with has previous experience as a teacher. That means she has had to take alot of coursework that have to do with understanding children and even families.
Being in the early childhood industry for 27 years myself, and having owned and operated small preschools and child care programs, wearing all the hats, includeing that of classroom teacher, I can say that first and foremost you must have a 1) passion for children and families; 2) adequate training and education in the field (without it, you cannnot wrap your brain around the issues that always arise in early learning settings. You will need to have a deeper level of understanding and knowledge of what your staff and teachers are experiencing and what their needs are.
I currently own and operate a small preschool. I also am a trainer and consultant in the early childhood field. One of my colleagues who has a high level degree in business, is lacking education in early childhood and wonders why she has difficulty in securing training gigs! It is not surprising to me that it is clearly because she has little experience and education in the field. It hurts her credibility, even though she is a highly intelligent business woman.
Here is an ogy, albeit taken from the perspective of working in another field. You are opening a restaurant. You want to be the head chef. Do you have training in food prep and can you hold your own in a large scale kitchen that serves many people? Or does the food smell and look so good that you are excited to jump in, feeling that you have enough 'passion' to pull it off? I'd say with the business background and education you have, stay in administration - but take some college level classes in early childhood. You and your husband would both do well to engage in this learning process. I was lead teacher at a private preschool for 2 years and a married couple were director and business administrators. The woman, director, had a degree from 30 yrs. prior! The husband was a CEO of a major corporation. She needed to come into current best practices by going back to get current classes in early childhood education and he needed to take classes as well. There were clearly difficulties each had in assuming the roles they were took in the business.
One final thought.. . . ask yourself what is motivating you to enter into this business situation. Is it that you see the dollar signs of a successful business within your grasp, or is it because you strongly believe in making the best impact on the lives of young children and their families, for whom you need to be comitted to mentoring and continuing your own learning.
I wish you the best in your venture, but felt it necessary to help you look at some of the deeper issues that factor into your final decision process.

Your question hit home with me. This past September, 3 other teachers and myself opened up a preschool that is affiliated with a Church. Our combined experience is well over 80 years.
This was a dream that the four of us wanted for quite a while. We had taught together for many years and last May, decided to pursue our dream.
We sat down with the Pastor of the church that houses us, explained to her our vision and after a few more meetings, received the go ahead.
This is quite different from your situation Debbie, however, we stepped out in faith and believed we could succeed. This was not about the "money", but the "love" of the young child and the desire to try and make a difference.
Our director has over 25 years of early childhood experience and has directed a preschool previously. All teachers are certified and have many years of experience.
We are also a "old-fashioned" preschool....no child care is involved.
We opened our doors this past September (our enrollment was beyond our expectations...as we had a "following" and many families we had known were anxious to be on board).
We have advertised heavily in the community and our enrollment for next year is very good.
Creating curriculum and forging a new path has been a wonderful experience for us.
We work very hard to give our best, but truth be known, it's really not a job.....it is a calling and such a privilege to work with young children and their families.
You were given very good advise in the previous posts......never forget the families.....they are as much a part of our school as each child who walks in our doors.
And second, get involved with NAEYC or a local affiliate.
We have done that in our area and attend Early Childhood Conferences and walk away with so much information. You never do stop "learning".
I wish you much success.

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. You would have lots of support and it seems as though the owners of the 'mini chain' are willing to help out.
We are opening our own school next year and it has been a huge endeavour but we are very excited. While I will teach, we will be more the business end of everything. I have certified teachers that I am hiring and I know they will have the experience with the kids that will make us a winning team.
I think the passion for it is the beginning and when such a great opportunity sort of falls in your lap it seems like a leap of faith is just the right answer. I wish you many years of success and fun!!

if you love the business and love the kids you can do it of course. I recommend you to take ECD classes so you can learn about the development of the children. work with families is difficult even if you love to work with kids. think. in this field you work with kids but the parents are the clients. you have to deal with them. and they ask many many questions about their children's day

I am surprized that in your state that to become a director you do not need years of experience teaching preschool children. In California to become a director not only must you have 12 Early Childhood Education units plus 3 units in Early Childhood Administration units and 4 years of teaching in a Preschool or Daycare setting. So it surprizes me that you can just buy a school get the units and be able to run a school.
I have 25 years of experience and my school did not go so well. So have a business plan. Know your price point. When you will make money. Yes it is all about loving the children and helping their parents, but you can not help parents and teach children if you are not making a livable wage. Especially if both you and your husband are involved. Know how long you will stay in the business and when it will make a profit. I know this sounds very pessmistic but I would not want what happened to me to happen to someone else. Because we were not business savy we nearly lost our house and I have ruined my credit. I love working with children and will continue to work with them just not owning my own center.
Be sure you know your location will serve you well. What about a play ground. There are lots of things to think about when you go into this kind of business, and there is not a lot of money in the business at least not in California. So I wish you good luck and do your homework.

You will know so much more after your 4 weeks of orientation -- a love of children is only the beginning! As another resource, you may want to check out www.naeyc.org. They are a wonderful early learning resource and your better centers are accredited through NAEYC. By being behind the scenes, you will not have to work on school holidays such as Christmas Eve or day after Thanksgiving. This gets tiring for directors/owners. I wish you and your husband lots of best wishes -- your enthusiasm is contagious!!

It is hard to believe that someone with 27 years of ECE experience still does not realize that a lot is two words, not one. What kind of educational experience does she really have? How can she teach young children language and grammar if she doesn't know it herself?

I am very well educated and also teach preschool and am opening my own school next year. However, I just wrote someone a note the other day and realized afterwards that I wrote then instead of than.
People get caught up in what they are typing and make mistakes...there really isn't any reason to be insulting about it!

The first step is to care about the "work" of helping families raise their children to be individuals who are benefits to society while exposing them to a variety of experiences and ideas. If it is your goal to meet the needs of the whole child, the next step is to understand what it takes to set up and run a center. Have you spoken with someone from Community Care Licensing about this? Visiting a lot of centers in the area will help you to network, give you an idea of what is already available, and help you refine your plans. This will be an ongoing process--providing an education requires teachers to constantly update their own education. If you love learning, your children will benefit. I could not agree more with the advice you have already received--take Early Childhood classes! No matter how much experience you have, you will benefit from the classes. You will learn the stages of childhood, different ways of doing things, appreciation of other people's perspectives, discipline techniques, how to plan and carry out activities, how to work with people of differing abilities, how to inspire staff memebers and hold meetings, etc. You also need to consider staff salaries and benefits, taxes, equipment, etc. This is the tip of the iceberg. I'm not trying to discourage you, just make you think about the whole picture. It can be overwhelming at first, but that network I talked about will really help. Best wishes!

There have been many valid points made and several good pieces of advice posted. There are many different aspects of this topic that could be addressed but I am only going to address a select few from my perspective of owning and operating a Montessori school.
First I would caution you not to get into this type of business unless you possess a genuine affection for children and their families. Many people believe they "love kids" only to find out working with children and their families is much different from their expectations.
Secondly I would be very careful about any franchise or business agreements into which you may enter. Find a good business lawyer to examine any contract before you sign anything. Lawyers can be pricey but often prove to be worth more than they cost.
I would become very familiar with all the state, county and or city codes under which you have to operate. I have seen centers shut down for failing to meet some very simple requirements, i.e. someone on staff with current child/infant cpr certificate,no building inspection by the state fire marshall, no certificate from the county and city health departments etc......and nothing will destroy any loyalty faster then having parents arrive at your doors only to hear "I'm sorry we can't take care of Johnny today"
Lastly, and most importantly, please don't alllow yourself to operate a "factory childcare" center. While it is posssible to make a decent living, in fairness to the families you will be serving, profit should not be your primary goal. Obviously it must be a consideration, very few centers are operated while losing money, but too often I see people enter into this business with their only concern being the bottom line. They usually wind up disappointed, disillusioned and disheartened when they don't realize the "big" money they thought they could make in a very easy fashion.
If profit and not care is your primary concern I would suggest entering another field. There are actually many easy ways to make good money. On the other hand, there are not too many easy ways to help families aid their children into growing up to be good people.
Good luck in whatever ventures you undertake.
