    Subject:making a volcano

i recently came across some pictures from maybe 5-8years ago, where we had made a volcano, using just sand in a dishpan, with dinosaurs. my question is, how do i make the volcano part? i forgot and did not keep the ingredients list. i goggled volcano and came up with some web sites, but none with products i could use from the home. i seem to remember maybe baking soda and vinegar? want to do this again with new set of children. thanks.

It is easy! After placing and shaping sand in a container or box--it does get messy, when you are really ready to proceed, add 1/4 to 1 cup baking soda on top of the sand. Do NOT mix. Then in front of children--or a few feet away (maybe out of site-if you wish), add 1/2 cup or more vinegar. Then present to the children. It has always worked for me in varying amount of both baking soda and vinegar. You can also add more viengar to the "mess" and you will get more reaction. But each repeat time is not as spectacular as the first. I hope that you emjoy doing this project.

We used salt dough & a plastic cup, the children enjoyed working together to sculpt the volcano & then make it "explode". When they wanted to do it again (of course!) we just pulled out the cup and put in a new one. Also, we were able to save our volcano & display it at our parent program at the end of the year, which the kids loved. Good luck!

We did ours in a wheel barrow with real dirt.Pile it up as high as u can around an extra thick mailing tube cut to end at the top of the pile. Put baking powder in the tube with drops of red food coloring. Then when your ready for the explosion just pour in the vineger. Looks so real because of the dirt. And later just pull out the tube and dump the dirt back in the garden.

Easy and fun activity, my prep class loved it! We made volcano out of sawdust made wet with water and some glue. Then we place 4 tablespoons of baking soda inside the hole of the volcano and I asked a prep student to pour a one-fourth cup of vinegar to the baking soda inside the volcano. Sure it exploded! It was so unforgettable for the kids that we showed off our volcano during the art exhibit.
