: : I am reasearching the pros and cons of third grade retention for my son. Anyone who has had experience with this I would appreciate your input.

: We retained our son in 3rd grade; this year he completed his first year of college! We discussed retention with him before we made the decision. His comment was, "I just don't feel like I'm the same age as everyone else". So he actually had some input into being retained and it wasn't without some regrets on his part later on. Having said all that, many studies say that retention puts a child at risk of dropping out of school later on. If your son has a learning disability, perhaps what is needed is more modification rather than retention. If he seems young compared to his peers, then maybe retention is right for him. Good luck: I know how intense and difficult the decision is.
