I have spoken to other teachers in various grade levels (pre-k to 3rd). The problem with kids giving 'attitiudes' seems to be increasing in the area schools. I spoke to a teacher that subbed in Head Start Early Start program and had a 18 month cuss at her! I have tried songs to model the correct behavior, one boy this year screams at me to stop because I am hurting his ears. Now, the other kids seem to follow his lead. I am trying to add miming to the songs, maybe this will create interest. It seems that some kids want constant entertainment (of their choice). Our agency is so focused on 'child'centered' as being DAP, isn't requiring a child to sit for an activity, such as working on his choice of a project in the math center, deafeating the true purpose of DAP? Akron U teaches teachers that the child will sit through the activity if he is ready to learn, but the goal of Head Start is getting the kids ready to learn (many of the kids don't have this interest). It seems at a time to be a big paradox.
