An easy transition is using the notes C and A and singing "Toys away, toys away, time to put your toys away." (C,A,C,A,C,C,A,C,C,C,A) You can use this for any kind of clean up song, lining up at the door, giving directions, etc. Kids respond well to music and often will sing along with you if you use these songs consistently. Another idea for fingerplays, lap bounces, and "this little piggy" type things is to find a book of nursery rhymes to use with children. You can make up your own motions, or simply do steady beat patting, clapping, stomping, etc. Good luck! Becky

    Subject:Substitute for sand in sandbox

i work in a day care center, and we have a sand box. However, we find that the sand is very difficult to contain/clean up. We would like to use something like rice or beans or birdseed instead. However, we do have little ones around, and we can't use something that they may choke on or stick in ears. Anyone have any success with a sand substitute? Any problems i should be aware of?

How young are your children? because rice, beans, dirt, snow, etc is very good sensory play for 3,4,or 5yr olds.

    Subject:sand substitutes

Try cotton balls, pasta shapes (can be colored with food coloring),strips of paper (different textures, like tissue paper, sand paper), fabric. You can use ANYTHING! You could cover the sand table, so that an adult would be near when very little ones are playing in it. Also, try water with plastic toys, boats, containers to measure and pour from. Snow is great for all ages. It's a great way for the little ones who aren't mobile enough to play outside in snow to experience it.

Dr. Jean Feldman's stuff is awesome! Check out her website at www.drjean.org for information about her C.D.'s (and the words to the songs), her books, activities and other great links. I teach Kindergarten and I love her stuff! She will be at the California Kindergarten Conference (CKA) in Santa Clara in January as the keynote speaker as well as another session.

The preschoolers and kindy at my centre do this little rhyme as a transition sometimes. My name is Kelly and I come from Kingaroy with a basket full of Kangaroos The teacher sings each child's name and then a place and object that start with the child's initial. It gets really tricky sometimes to think of place names. But the kids love it!!! Towards the end of the year, the children think of the words to fill in the gaps themselves.

    Subject:song for washing hands

Encouraging children to spend the appropriate amount of time washing their hands is challenging. While working in home childcare I started the routine of singing the ABC song quite slowly while they washed, lathered and rinsed their hands. Once they were done, they could dry their hands. Not only did this give them a cue they were finished, they also learned their ABC's and they had the cleanest hands in town. They loved it!
