Hello everyone. I am going to open up a training business which will run courses for early childhood professionals and parents. The courses will be on things such as how to make educational resources, setting up original learning centres etc. Does any one have any suggestions for courses that would be helpful for themselves or their workforce.

Good luck to you! I have found training early childhood providers to be extremely rewarding. If I could give you just one piece of advice... research the requirements your state may have in terms of training being recognized and counting toward licensing in-service expectations. Many states have trainer registries and requirements. Best wishes!!

This may be too late, but here goes... What I did was write one paragraph for each functional area and list what I do with the children I care for. With one paragraph for each functional area it will make your wordcount 300-500 words as you need.

I don't know the difference but when I obtain the cda I can work on the accociate. I am just starting to work on the cda. I go to school 4 nights and work 40 hrs. This is my second week and I have 6 more weeks. It has been tough but I am enjoying it. It's been 22 year's since I've been in school, what a challenge it is. Are you working with children? I am working at a local head start. I've been there since mid April. I left my previous position ater 12 year's. New owners came, took benefits away, so this opportunity came up, 4 miles from home. Previously I drove 30 minutes one way. The change has been a positive experience. I guess it was time for a change. God's will. I need to study now, have a great day. Tammy

    Subject:cda vs. degree

Hi Rudy, I'm going to school to get an associate's in ECE. (Might go on for my bachelor's.) Several girls are in my classes that are going for their CDA, so we take some of the same classes, but a CDA doesn't require as many hours/classes as an associate's. On my way to my associate's I have completed all the work and the classes required for a CDA. Hope this answers your question. Schari

Thanks for the replies. I was jsut wondering. I have a bachelors degree in Early Childhood education. I teach pre-kdg in my local school district and get paid the same on the teacher pay salary. I worked in day care for 20 years before getting my degree. In that 20 yrs I only made $3 and hour more from when I started. I now have medical benefits and make decent money. I,m not sure you can do that with a CDA though. Maybe look into pursuing a bachelors degree in education. Thanks again for the replies.

Tammy, yes there are! I attended www.CDAClass.org. It is a great program and you work at your own speed. You could take up to one year to complete, but I did it in 4 months! You can submit work during the day, evening and even on the weekends. It was great and I did not have to travel across town to any class. I can't say enough about it. You should check out their website - www.cdaclass.org.

    Subject:cda vs. ECE degree

The CDA credential used to be accepted by Head Start for a teacher position. Now, I believe, by around 2007-2010 you will need a min of a 2yr, then they are trying to phase all Head Start teachers having a 4yr degree in education. A CDA is a certain number of training hours (CEU's, state approved training, or college credits). Along with that you have to work a certain number of hours in the field, keep a portfolio, and write papers based a assigned domains. An advisor evalutes you and your portfolio, you take a test, and then get a CDA. It's basically the equivalant of three ECE college classes and on-the-job experience.

    Subject:CDA Graduate

I'm a CDA Graduate. I received my CDA just a few months ago. I really loved the training classes. I took my training classes, compiled a portfolio that consists of 17 resources under 6 Competency Goals. You also make your Autobiography and your Resume. Your advisor comes to your place of work (in my case, my home) and runs observations. You're expected to learn from those! Also, the parents fill out a questionaire and you have to have so many of them returned. You also run observations on a child in your program to document their growht and development. Then you request the formal test which is both written and verbal - I was intimidated by the thought of that, but it was soooo easy! Where people messed up was they weren't doing their rough drafts of their competency goals as they went along - basically they were blowing off their homework and it back logged - once that happens, it's hard to catch up! Now that I have my CDA, I can be a teacher in any preschool in my area. It's also a stepping stone to move on to get your ECE. Hope that helps!

Sherril, I suggest visiting www.CDAClass.org and their links page. They have information about national child care organizations and other materials for putting together your resource file and writing your compentency statements. You can also take your 120 hours of coursework with them as well - in the comfort of your own home. It worked really, really well for me.

Gloria you need the 120 hours of training to get the credential. Check our www.cdacouncil.org and they will give you information. Also, I took classes at www.cdaclass.org. Check out their FAQs page - it had a lot of useful information.

why bother??? just more paperwork to complete. if your ECE 2 yr degree is current, you are OK. A 2yr ECE is above a CDA. You will be working 'down' to obtain a CDA. HeadStart teachers will all need a 4 yr degree soon. CDA will only be acceptable for an assistant teacher. you say worker, are you a teacher or an aide?? or a worker for the agency? why do you feel the need to obtain a CDA?

"if your ECE 2 yr degree is current, you are OK." Is that true also for a V.P.K teacher? In two months I will have my associates degree in E.C.E and was hoping to be the lead teacher for a V.P.K class. I was told that I had to obtain a CDA or CDAE in order to be a lead teacher of V.P.K and that the state doesn't acknowledge associate degrees. Is this true?

i have just recently completed my 90 hour certificate at a community college, planing to try and get a prn position for experience. i'm thinking to change from getting degree from nursing to earlychildhood ed. i know lots of people thinks i may be foolish, because nursing pays more. but i just started to lean towards helping kids in learning or eventually may turn to social work. is any one out there already have their bs degree in education?, what else can you do with a 2 or 4 year degree in early childhood?. i love children very much ,but not quite sure if i want to teach, but know for sure want to work and help samll children ages birth to five or seven yr old early intervention. i hope to return to school this fall, i'v been out of school since jan 2002. i work weekends as a nursing assistant. i have two small children 3 1/2 and 1 yr old. i stay home in the week to save on baby sitting money.

For those of you with ECE degrees, or BS, or a college degree behind you, then yes - going for your CDA would be working backwards. If you want it solely as a "perk" for your childcare, may I suggest working for Accreditation instead.
