Subject:How much space do you need for a family child care?
|
Right now this is my biggest concern- I live in a small house and there's no garage or anything to renovate. I'd like to hear from other people who started out with extremely limited space. TIA

The first thing you need to do is check your state licensing regulations. In PA. it is 40 sq. ft. per child inside. The size of your available space will determine how many children you can care for.

Well first you need to find out what your state regulations are. The state of Indiana allows 12. However I don't think I could handle having 12 children and another adult in the house at the same time. Until I can expand, or can add an extra room. I may not have more then eight. So with all that being said
1 check with state regulations
2. maybe invite a group of friends and family members children over for an afternoon and see how you will feel with that amount of children (this will allow you to get an idea of your house flow with active children) If you are overwhelmed it will not be a good experience for you or the children
Ideally you should designate at least one room for only child care purposes with open spaces. LImit the amount of items you have in the room. Preferably you can have a closet, garage, or basement to store unused items. Rotate toys.

It is so not necessary to have dedicated day care space. In NYS, the regulations say, "The home must have adequate indoor space for the comfort of the children and to accommodate a variety of activities for the number of children in care." Nice and vague, isn't it? But they limit the number of children you can have - if you accept babies, you can't have more than 2 children under the age of 2 plus 3 children over the age of 2 plus 2 School-aged chidlren. If you only accept children over the age of 2, you can have 6 children plus 2 school aged children. You can Group family, but I;m not familiar with that and don't know the numbers.
You just need to be creative with your furniture most times! Turn the couch so that you have a corner for books and quiet play like puzzles. The blocks, keep inside a closet where they (or you) can pull them out in the morning into your living room and they can play there. Tape paper to the walls in your hall and they can color and paint there - who says they need an easel? Those only take up space!
If you love children, family child care is wonderful. I've loved it for years now.
