    Subject:selling my in-home daycare

I have been running a daycare from my home for almost 15 years now, and have been thinking that I would like to retire. I planned on giving my parents notice and just closing the daycare. My husband suggests that we try to "sell" the daycare either alone or with the house (which was custom built with the daycare in the basement). Does anyone have any thoughts or interest in this idea? Do you think it would work? Thanks for your ideas/input. debi

    Subject:Resource

There is a great resource you have to call if you're serious about this. Tom Copeland of the Redleaf Press Institute. You can email him directly with this question and he'll let you know what is involved and what you would need to do. I would say, though - use caution when selling to someone you don't know. They're taking on your name. People will assume that the next person is getting your stamp of approval. God forbid that person isn't the same kind of person you are... Plus to the person willing to take over your daycare... they are going to want to know if you've ever been violated or what-not. Basically, the kind of person you are. This is so much more than selling your house. Personally, I wouldn't sell my name. Maybe all the STUFF - the toys, the furniture, etc., sure - maybe even my house. But NEVER my daycare name. I've worked to hard to make mine what it is. I wouldn't sell that to anyone. Let them build up their own name - if they're worthy of it.

    Subject:selling...

Hi Debbie, There was an in-home care near me, that I was dying to buy. It never did sell, the price was too high. Just be sure to check all your options. That one just got torn down last week. Meanwhile, another in-home center was put up for sale & sold within a few weeks very close by. So it all depends on your market. Just make sure you do your research. I wouldn't sell the buisness name either, your reputation is at stake. You don't say how big your in-home center is, if you like your house and your area, sell off what you have & re-purpose the space. If you want to move or want a smaller home, then talk to some experts & get it on the market. It's really a very personal decision and you have to do what is best for you. Good luck!

    Subject:Selling your daycare business

What an interesting idea, as far as selling your daycare business & house. I would assume it would depend on zoning laws if you were to actually sell it as a business, but I'm not up-to-date on those criteria. What I would suggest, however, is to contact your local CCR&R; *(Child Care Resource and Referral). They might have some very beneficial information to help you. I would also talk to your local Head Start program. If they are like ours, they are always looking for additional space, but sometimes they cannot actually purchase buildings. Any organization that does work with families and children could be a possible candidate. If you were located here in our town, for example, we could run our Parents As Teachers program out of it and utilize the activities and environemnt for trainings for child care providers and parents. Good luck!

Ida, I am located in Bay City, Michigan. The home including the daycare is about 3,000 square feet. It is custom built with the daycare in the basement and has a separate entrance for the daycare. Let me know if you would like more information. Debi

Hameeda, I know you say you're just starting your own childcare - I don't know if you've ever done anything like that before, but to get your CDA, you've had to have had (I think) two years experience working with children. I'd say don't shell out the money or sign anything until you find out if you're eligible. I'm glad to hear you want your CDA and ECE, but I'd say work in the field for a few years before you commit your time and money to these ventures. Family Child Care isn't for everybody. It takes a long time to make it financially worth it sometimes. So I'd say wait until you build up your child care and know that this is really something you want to do first. Good luck in whatever you decide! Linda

Tonya, I don't know how things are in GA; I'm in NY. We have a lot of programs out there to help working families better make ends meet. If they contact Dept. of Soc. Sec. or Office of Children and Family services, they could get child care assistance. As a registered child care, I am able to take the children, the parent pays part and Soc Services pays me the rest. There is also another program - Workforce Development Institute - they help parents who are even 200% above the poverty level. Also, I know another provider who contracted with a local business. The employer pays part, the parents pay the rest - the parents are guaranteed care whether their child is sick or healthy, though - which is a better guarantee to the employer that their workers are coming in that day! As far as the two weeks advance, I also found that parents had a hard time with that. That's why I have them pay it in amall installments over a period of a few weeks. I've found when I spread them out like that, they're better able to meet them. Good Luck!
