    Subject:Counting

Hello Everyone, I need your help about counting at Circle time. Our students are 5 years old now. When we are at circle time with children, one of them among kids counting 1-20 . End of the year all of them at least once had count 1- 100 at circle time. Its my opinion its boring for kids. For example One kids counting 1-70 middle of the may and the others wait him or her until its finished. I tried to explain my colleagues about these activities wrong sides in my opinion. I think only counting without matching with objects can be help strengthful memory. What are you doing about counting with their kids. Can you offer some resource to answer my question?

    Subject:rote counting

You're right - It's been shown that rote counting is meaningless to young children. Yes, they have to know the name of the number, but saying 3 and being able to identify what 3 is, are two different matters! You're able to get numbers across to children throughout the day - they can count the number of children in line, count sticks they collect, count the number of trains on the tracks, etc. Whatever the child has interest in - the number of crayons in the box, etc. You can get information to back this up in just about an Early Childhood Development book. Good Luck!

rote skills are also important, too. however, reciting 1-100 at circle time is too tedious. the other kids are loosing learning time themselves as they sit through a kid counting for that long. rote counting should be done at small group or individually. math is developed as one-on-one, random rote counting, then matching number to quantity, then number recognition.

    Subject:spice it up

I didn't mean to imply that rote counting is useless. It does have it's place in my daycare, but not at circle time. Circle time for me is group activities, sharing, bonding, etc. So when do the children do rote counting? All day at various points! For example, racing. Racing is fun - They race from one point to the next - Say they're at point A - they start off counting from 1-20, do a task and go to point B - Or if we're doing a science task, I have them count from 1 to whatever until we see a change. Or good ol' hide and seek! I have them count to 50 before they seek, etc. ---- Yes, sitting in a circle waiting for another child to count is boring. However, if that same child is crouched under a table anxiously waiting for the child to reach 50....I think you'll find they're counting along in their heads!

great ideas! I hope I didn't offend, but I have heard some trainers dismiss rote counting as useless. We do learn alot of skills through rote memory, it sounds like you found alot of fun ways to incorportate this skill in everyday situations :) I read that book with the teachers name, I forget the name now! ...100 days of Kindergarten. We read the story day one, and count down till the 100th day when we have a party. and we invite parents and volunteers to come in and help the kids count items in the room to 100. a great way to tie in literacy and volunteers, along with a making math fun.

    Subject:The 100 days

Don't worry, I wasn't offended! Actually, reading your email made me re-read mine where it did sound as if I dismissed rote counting. I just wanted to clarify! Thanks! Great ideas about the 100 days! I really liked that! I think I'd like to incorporate that! Do you have each child bring in 100 of something or do you divide it up so that when all the children bring in their items they NOW have a 100 of something? Like if you have 20 children each bring in 5 jellybeans and now you have a 100? What works well? I'm worried a child wouldn't bring in the item and now we only have 95! :)

Actually I never ignore rote counting too.As I said before its useful for memory also a stage for numeracy. But some teachers cant see differency between improving math skills and rote counting. I know that activities and its work great. You can also make a display you can use it to shows number of each days. So children get excited when they see numbers of days.

    Subject:Rote Counting

Hey i just stumbled on this site and thought I'd ask for some advice. Im a practicum student and I have to teach a math lesson on Rote counting to 100 by 10's. Thats what Everyday Math says I should be doing anyway. My co op teacher told me to do up to 30 as the kids are not ready to go to 100. Can someone offer up an idea for an activity, or a web resource that has good activities? I was thinking of doing 4 centers, but it seems like a hard subject to get the students interested in. PS this is for Kindergarten.
